Essex Open won the toss and elected to have the first centre pass. Due to their small squad, Essex Open had to resort to playing a defender in the shooting circle at GS but she used her frame well to confidently hold her space and convert her shots from under the post. Thoroughbreds found it difficult to get to grips with the slippery surface and were struggling to get the ball out of defence. In attack, GS Mattie Thompson and GA Helene Hall were consistently converting their efforts but the high lobs into the circle were often picked off. Despite this, Thoroughbreds managed to establish an early lead and led 11-13 at the end of the first quarter.
Both teams remained unchanged for the second quarter and the match resumed where it had left off. Essex Open continued to use their GS as their main target but Thoroughbreds GK Gilly Chitty fought to force the GS out towards the edge of the circle where she felt less confident to shoot. C Kelly Chick worked tirelessly to bridge the gap between defence and attack yet fed the circle with poise and control. With the umpire penalising the Essex Open defence, Thoroughbreds used this to their advantage to extend their lead. The score at half-time was 21-24 in Thoroughbreds’ favour.
Thoroughbreds used their strength in depth to make a number of changes at half-time bringing on Alice Ewer at GS, Lucy Cadge at WA and Shana Potgieter at C. Immediately the pace of the game stepped up a gear with the ball whipping out of defence and into attack. GS Alice Ewer took some spectacular balls and managed to convert them despite Essex Open’s new GK trying to intimidate her. Thoroughbreds were able to score off the fast break due to the defensive trio of GK Gilly Chitty, GD Ellie Utku and WD Sophie Hansell putting up an impenetrable wall and picking up numerous interceptions. As Thoroughbreds continued with this style of play, Essex Open’s heads dropped as they fell further behind. Thoroughbreds outscored their opponents 6-17 in the third quarter and were in a commanding position leading 27-41.
For the fourth quarter, Thoroughbreds decided to make a couple of changes, introducing Vicky Mason at GD and bringing Kelly Chick back on at WD. Essex Open had also made some changes in defence and threw everything they had at the Norfolk side. Thoroughbreds took a while to settle and Essex Open exploited this in attack with the GS receiving the ball under the post and consistently scoring. As the quarter progressed, GK Gilly Chitty and GD Vicky Mason made some instinctive switched in defence forcing the Essex Open GA to shoot from distance, which she did with ease, confidently converting her efforts. Thoroughbreds’ hard work paid off and they managed to make a number of interceptions towards the end of the quarter. Thoroughbreds claimed another convincing victory with the final score at 42-54 in their favour.

Following two consecutive losses, this was a crucial win for the Norfolk side and put them into a play-off position at the half-way stage of the season. Thoroughbreds chose to start with their tried and tested line-up which has served them well in the past. From previous experience, Thoroughbreds were expecting a physical match and it certainly did not disappoint. Sussex Thunder won the toss and signalled their intentions early on. It was neck and neck for the first 15 minutes and there was not much to choose between the two sides. Thanks to the controlled and composed manner in which the home side played, Thoroughbreds had a slight advantage and ended the first quarter marginally ahead 13-12. Both sides remained unchanged for the second quarter and play resumed where it had left off. GK Gilly Chitty and GD Ellie Utku identified Sussex Thunder’s 6ft 3ins tall shooter as the main target and decided to double, forcing the GA to take the majority of shots. This paid immediate dividends and Thoroughbreds were able to establish a small but significant lead as the quarter progressed. Sussex Thunder fought to stay in contention but Thoroughbreds closed downs all available outlets. As the ball flew out of the Sussex defence, GD Ellie Utku ran through to take a spectacular interception and fed the ball to GS Mattie Thompson right under the post. Thoroughbreds won the second quarter 10-7 and led 23-19 at half-time. Thoroughbreds made changes in attack for the third quarter introducing Alice Ewer at GS, Lucy Cadge at WA and Shana Potgieter at C whilst Sussex Thunder made changes to their mid-court. Thoroughbreds’ changes had the bigger effect with the injection of pace immediately posing problems for the Sussex side. Again, Sussex struggled in attack having to rely on their younger and less experienced GA to convert their efforts. Thoroughbreds extended their lead winning the quarter 12-7 and the score was 35-26 in favour of the home side at the end of the third quarter. Thoroughbreds only made one change for the fourth quarter bringing Kelly Chick back on at WD. Sussex Thunder returned to court intent on overturning the 9-goal deficit and increased their physical attack. C Shana Potgieter buckled momentarily under the intense physical challenges but valiantly continued for the last 5 minutes. Thoroughbreds united for the final few minutes to exert their dominance over their opponents. Thoroughbreds outscored their opposition 14-9 in the fourth quarter and emerged victorious winning 49-35. Player of the Match: Ellie Utku

As they made their journey south, half of the team was delayed due to the A11 being closed because of a fatal accident in the early hours of the morning. With the start time imminent, Thoroughbreds only had 7 players at the venue and were still without any of their shooters so had to resort to putting alternative players in those positions. Thoroughbreds will be disappointed with the result in a game they should have won as despite a valiant effort they were always battling to get back on level terms. Thoroughbreds lost the toss and were immediately playing catch up as Hertford Hornets converted their efforts and took an early advantage. The Norfolk side’s flow was disrupted due to players being out of position and the whole team fought hard to stay in contention until reinforcements arrived. Considering the line-up, Thoroughbreds surpassed all expectations and put in a credible performance with Hertford Hornets leading 9-5 at the end of the first quarter. The absent players arrived just at the beginning of the break and Thoroughbreds made the necessary changes for the second quarter with Alice Ewer and Helene Hall taking the court at GS and GA respectively and Lucy Cadge moving to WA. Without the benefit of a warm-up, Thoroughbreds took a while to settle in attack with the final ball often going astray and Hertford Hornets capitalized on their uncertainty extending their lead further. As the quarter progressed, Thoroughbreds found their feet and began to make an impression on the deficit but eventually lost the second quarter 14-11 and trailed 23-16 at half-time. Thoroughbreds made a number of changes at half-time bringing on Shelley Pauling at WA, Shana Potgieter at C and Jo Pegg at WD with Sophie Hansell moving back to GD. In a much more evenly matched quarter, Thoroughbreds continued to take the game to Hertford Hornets with the defensive trio of Jo Pegg, Sophie Hansell and Gilly Chitty restricting their opponents’ space and forcing them into making errors. The home side maintained their lead thanks to some consistent shooting but Thoroughbreds made slight headway winning the quarter 11-12 with Hertford Hornets ahead 34-28. With nothing to lose and still believing the game was there for the taking, Thoroughbreds made one change for the fourth quarter with Kelly Chick returning at C. Hertford Hornets began to crumble under the pressure missing crucial shots which Thoroughbreds’ Alice Ewer and Helene Hall calmly converted. The Norfolk side clawed back the deficit to draw level in the dying minutes of the match only for Hertford Hornets to score and take the lead just before the final whistle. Despite Thoroughbreds winning the fourth quarter 6-11, Hertford Hornets snatched victory with the final score at 40-39. Player of the Match: Alice Ewer

This victory saw them retain 3rd place in the league but did come at a price as they lost yet another defender to injury in the opening minutes. Team North East won the toss and elected to have the first centre pass. Thoroughbreds broke down Team North East's style of play early on and quickly established a solid lead. GK Helen Dolding sustained a serious knee injury minutes into the quarter and was replaced by Gilly Chitty, last week's player of the match. The shooters from Team North East began to find their range but the impenetrable defence in place all through the court limited their scoring opportunities. Thoroughbreds continued to dominate in all areas of the court and ended the quarter having scored almost twice as many goals as their opposition, 17-9 ahead. Team North East made one change for the second quarter whereas Thoroughbreds remained unchanged. C Shana Potgieter and WA Lucy Cadge showed good understanding to work the ball into the attack and GA Helene Hall and GS Alice Ewer repeatedly converted their efforts. Team North East became increasingly frustrated and began to impose their physical presence on their opponents although they occasionally lost their discipline and were duly penalised by the umpires. WD Sophie Hansell anticipated a pass out of defence and flew down the court to intercept the ball to the advancing GD, narrowly avoiding going offside. Thoroughbreds scored an impressive 21 goals in the 15-minute period compared to Team North East's 10 and the score at half-time was 38-19 in favour of the home side. Thoroughbreds made a number of changes at half-time introducing Mattie Thompson at GS and replacing the centre court line-up with Jo Pegg at WD, Laura Taylor at C and Shelley Pauling at WA. Team North East were determined to earn a vital point by getting half the score-line and battled to make the most of their limited opportunities. Thoroughbreds needed to put in an extra pass to get onto the edge of the circle as their long lobs into the circle were consistently intercepted by the springy GK from their northern counterparts. WD Jo Pegg worked relentlessly to restrict and limit her opponent's movement around the court. Team North East conceded a penalty in the circle as the quarter drew to a close and GS Mattie Thompson calmly converted the shot to extend Thoroughbreds' lead even further. The Norfolk side were in a commanding position winning 53-29 at the end of the third quarter. Team North East threw caution to the wind and made numerous changes for the fourth quarter. Thoroughbreds brought Alice Ewer back on at GA and Sophie Hansell returned to the court at GD. The Norfolk side instantly raised their game and the ball was flying around in attack. GA Alice Ewer made some discerning runs into the circle and combined well with GS Mattie Thompson to ensure the hard work was finished off with a goal. Defensively, Thoroughbreds worked tirelessly to restrict the space and close down options with GK Gilly Chitty picking up countless interceptions at the back. Thoroughbreds outscored their opponents 16-6 in the fourth quarter and claimed an emphatic 69-35 victory.

Despite Thoroughbreds currently having the better form this season, they were aware of the danger that Wealden posed after one win apiece last season.
Thoroughbreds lost the toss and it was apparent from the off that it was going to be an intense affair with both sides unyielding in their play. Wealden brought the game to Thoroughbreds with some dominant defending and accurate shooting. Thoroughbreds found themselves in an unfamiliar position trailing at the end of the first quarter for the first time this season 11-14.
Both sides remained unchanged for the second quarter and Thoroughbreds used their quarter time to regroup and went ‘back to basics.’ This had an immediate impact as they unsettled Wealden’s play and began to make an impression on the score line. As the quarter progressed, the Norfolk side grew in confidence and their better movement and more direct passing allowed them to overtake the lead. The pressure applied by the whole team in all areas of the court restricted the opposition to only 7 goals in the third quarter compared to Thoroughbreds’ 15. The score at half-time was 26-21 in Thoroughbreds’ favour.
The third quarter saw a number of tactical substitutions with the introduction of Alice Ewer at GS, Helen Dolding moving out to GD and making way for a first start of the season for new addition Gilly Chitty at GK. Wealden remained unchanged and the high intensity was beginning to affect their play with frustrations resulting in numerous penalties being conceded. In comparison, Thoroughbreds remained calm and composed and were able to reap the benefits with various players picking up several interceptions thanks to the pressure being applied in all court areas. In defence, tight marking by GK Gilly Chitty meant that she was able to intercept the lofted passes that had previously eluded the Norfolk side. Thoroughbreds extended their lead further by another 4 goals, ahead 39-30 at the end of the third quarter.
Thoroughbreds made one change for the fourth quarter bringing on Laura Taylor at C which further rejuvenated the side, and combined with the composed and consistent shooting by GS Alice Ewer and GA Helene Hall, allowed them to increase their lead. Wealden were equally accurate in the shooting circle but had fewer opportunities due to the whole court defence. In attack, WA Lucy Cadge and C Laura Taylor patiently worked the ball into the circle making use of the defensive support, backing up when necessary. Thoroughbreds stormed ahead with a flurry of goals in the final minutes breaking through the 50-goal barrier for only the second time this season. Thoroughbreds emerged convincing winners thanks to yet another impressive team performance with the score at 54-39 at the final whistle.
Thoroughbreds Player of the Match was Gilly Chitty.

The two teams had had contrasting starts to the season with Thoroughbreds only loss to date at the hands of the team occupying 2nd place in the league table. Elmdon on the other hand, were yet to record a win and were currently lying at the foot of the table. The Norfolk side could not afford to be complacent though as last season, Elmdon had beaten Thoroughbreds twice by the narrowest of margins, a mere one goal on both occasions.
Thoroughbreds started positively after winning the toss and electing to have the first centre pass. They quickly established an early lead but their progress was sharply halted when GK Hannah Knight was forced to leave the court after sustaining a serious injury. Thoroughbreds reshuffled their defence moving Helen Dolding back to GK and bringing Ellie Utku on at GD. The new line up combined well to limit Elmdon's scoring opportunities and the Norfolk side extended their lead. The first quarter ended with Thoroughbreds in a commanding position leading 17-6.
Both sides remained unchanged for the second quarter. In defence, GK Helen Dolding anticipated the play and was quick to fly out making some amazing interceptions. Thoroughbreds' improved movement allowed them to whip the ball through the zone set up in centre court but Elmdon were still valiantly fighting on and their tall and rangy GK made it increasingly difficult to feed the circle preventing the Norfolk side from benefiting from these opportunities. Despite this, Thoroughbreds remained in control with over twice the score of their opposition at half time, leading 29-14.
Thoroughbreds made a number of changes at half-time introducing Joanne Pegg at WD, Shana Potgieter at C, Lucy Cadge at WA and Alice Ewer at GS. The substitutions immediately added an injection of pace pulling the Elmdon defence apart and the attack managed to feed the ball in with clinical precision. Elmdon continued to consistently convert their efforts but their scoring opportunities were few and far between, allowing Thoroughbreds to extend their lead even further with the score at 39-21 at the end of the third quarter.
With fatigue taking it's toll on the Elmdon squad of seven, Thoroughbreds seized the opportunity to try out some different combinations with Mattie Thompson returning at GS and Alice Ewer moving out to GA, as well as the centre court rotating with Lucy Cadge moving to C, Shana Potgieter moving back to WD and Joanne Pegg moving into the attack at WA. Elmdon were desperately trying to cling onto the crucial 1 point they would gain from getting half of their opponent's score but in their endeavour made a number of mistakes that Thoroughbreds were able to capitalise on. At the final score, it was a comprehensive victory for Thoroughbreds after yet another good all-round team performance with the final score at 52-28 in their favour. Thoroughbreds ‘Player of the Match’ was Helen Dolding.

Leeds Carnegie fielded a team largely comprising of players from their Superleague franchise. Thoroughbreds were not going to let this deter them and hoped to continue their winning ways following their victory over Essex Open the previous week.

Leeds Carnegie won the toss and started confidently but Thoroughbreds simple yet effective play kept them in contention. The teams continued goal-for-goal until a fantastic interception by GD Vicky Mason handed the Norfolk side the lead. They extended their lead further following some more tenacious defending by the whole team and WD Sophie Hansell spied the Leeds Carnegie GK coming out of the circle to feed a long ball into GS Mattie Thompson. The first quarter ended with Thoroughbreds leading 13-11. Thoroughbreds remained unchanged for the 2nd quarter but a stunned Leeds Carnegie made changes in the centre court. With only one interception the difference between the two teams, neither side were willing to surrender. WA Lucy Cadge was floored after getting sandwiched in a challenge between Leeds Carnegie’s WD and GK but Thoroughbreds were determined not to be dominated by their physically superior opponents. Leeds Carnegie pulled level thanks to some superb shooting and the score at half-time stood at 21-21.

Thoroughbreds made a number of changes at half-time introducing Michelle Pauling at WA, Shana Potgeiter at C, Helen Dolding at GD and an injury meant that Alice Ewer replaced Helene Hall at GA. Leeds Carnegie capitalised on the uncertainty brought about by so many changes and Leeds vibrant new attacking line-up combined well to give Leeds the advantage. Again, Thoroughbreds fought to withstand the physical challenges but C Shana Potgieter took a tumble early on. Defensive support was required to work the ball into the Thoroughbreds’ attack and the Leeds WD was repeatedly penalised for persistent contact. Thoroughbreds struggled to maintain the intensity they had sustained in the first half of the match and found themselves 10 goals adrift of their rivals at the end of the 3rd quarter with the score at 37-27 to the home side.

Helene Hall and Vicky Mason returned to the Thoroughbreds line-up for the 4th quarter at GS and GK respectively. Leeds commanding lead did not discourage the Norfolk side and they fought on valiantly. The new defensive combination of Helen Dolding and Vicky Mason tested the Leeds attack forcing them to make mistakes. The Leeds WD continued to clash with Michelle Pauling resulting in yet another Thoroughbreds player falling down. Despite a good all-round team performance and everyone making an impact in the match, the Norfolk side could not suppress the quality of the Superleague contingent and the final whistle blew with the score-line at 52-36 in Leeds Carnegie’s favour.
Thoroughbreds Player of the Match was awarded to WD Sophie Hansell.

Having played each other previously during the 2008/9 season, and with one win apiece, Thoroughbreds were expecting a hard fought match. Thoroughbreds had some new additions to their squad in the form of ex-England U17 and U19 squad member Lucy Cadge who has also played for Mavericks’ Superleague side, and current England U19 Talent 2 squad member and Mavericks Youth player Alice Ewer.
Thoroughbreds won the toss and elected to take the first centre pass. With a large supporting home crowd, they started positively with an inspired long feed by WA Michelle Pauling from inside the centre third into GS Mattie Thompson. Thoroughbreds raced ahead and were soon 6-1 up within the first few minutes. GK Hannah Knight dominated her much smaller opponent, restricting the feeds into the circle and minimising the scoring opportunities. Essex Open responded in defence by picking off any aerial balls although they were unable to hold onto them, and Thoroughbreds managed to score from the resulting throw-ins. As the quarter drew to a close, Essex Open had finally settled down and were beginning to make an impression on Thoroughbreds commanding lead. The 1st quarter ended with the score-line at 13-7 in Thoroughbreds favour.
Thoroughbreds team remained unchanged for the 2nd quarter whilst Essex Open decided to bring on new players at GK and C. The game became much more evenly matched with the amount of unforced errors reduced by both sides. Thoroughbreds were struggling to get the ball into the attacking third and frequently had to resort to passing it back to their supporting defence. C Kelly Chick maintained her impressive work rate and GA Helene Hall and GS Mattie Thompson consistently converted their efforts, keeping Thoroughbreds in a dominant position. Thoroughbreds maintained their lead drawing the 2nd quarter 11-11, with the half-time score at 24-18.
Both teams made changes at half-time, with Thoroughbreds introducing debutants Lucy Cadge at WA and Alice Ewer at GS as well as bringing on Jo Pegg at WD and moving Sophie Hansell across to GD. In attack, C Kelly Chick and WA Lucy Cadge patiently worked the ball around edge of the circle until an opportunity to feed the ball in presented itself. GS Alice Ewer quickly found her range converting shots from various distances. The defensive trio of GK Hannah Knight, GD Sophie Hansell and WD Jo Pegg combined well taking numerous interceptions and forcing the Essex Open attack into making errors. Thoroughbreds extended their lead to end the 3rd quarter 34-27 ahead.
Thoroughbreds only made one change for the 4th quarter bringing Vicky Mason back on at WD. Essex Open threw everything they had at the Norfolk side but Thoroughbreds refused to surrender, tirelessly challenging for every ball. With both teams unwilling to compromise, Essex Open began to falter under the pressure and Thoroughbreds managed to maintain their composure to emerge victorious with the final score at 43-34.
Thoroughbreds ‘player of the match’ was awarded to Kelly Chick.

Encouraged by their efforts in their last match against Leeds Carnigie, Thoroughbreds began with the belief they could cause an upset against the team relegated from Premier league 1 last season and currently sitting at the top of Premier League 2. Thoroughbreds won the toss and elected to have the 1st centre pass. It was apparent from the start that teh game promised to be an up-tempo and fast paced affair. Falcons Black pressurised the Norfolk side in all areas of the court restricting their space and any subsequent long balls were picked off. Despite this Thoroughbreds too an early lead with GA Helene Hall and GS Martha Thompson consistently converting their efforts while Falcon Blacks struggled to made the most of the opportunities presented to them. Towards the end of the quarter, Thoroughbreds became increasingly static and Falcons Black took advantage of this clawing back the deficit. The 1st quarter ended with Thoroughbreds narrowly ahead 10-11. Falcons Black brought on a new shooter for the 2nd quarter but the Thoroughbreds line up remained unchanged. Both sides upped their game and there were some brilliant examples of skill on display. Thoroughbreds improved movement gave them a renewed vigour, but equally Falcons Black continued to whip the ball around with their efforts now being converted. GD Vicky Mason, WD Sophie Hansell, C Kelly Chick and WA Shelley Pauling worked hard constantly reoddering to help bring the ball from defence into attack. With both teams evenly matched, the score at half time was 19-22 in Thoroughbreds favour. A number of changes were made at half time with Thoroughbreds introducing Helen Dolding at GD, Shana Potgieter at C, Lucy Cadge at WA and Alice Ewer at GS. The new combination made an instant impact with quick slick play taking the game up another gear. The attack patiently worked the ball around with some controlled precise feeding from C Shana Potgieter and WA Lucy Cadge. GS Alice Ewer quickly composed herself calmly converting her efforts. Falcons Black responded consistently taking their scoring chances and keeping them in contention. Thoroughbreds gradually extended their lead to be 30-34 ahead at hte end of the 3rd quarter. Falcons Clack decided to throw caution into the wind making a number of changes for the 4th quarter while Thoroughbreds kept their team the same. Thoroughbreds started confidently dictating to the opposition and forcing them into numerous errors. Falcons Black struggled to adjust to their changes and consistently resorted to sending the ball backwards due to the tenacious marking by the defensive trio of QD Sophie Hansell, GD Helen Dolding and GK Hannah Knight. Thoroughbreds finished the match with a flourish with the score at 37-44 at the final whistle. Players of the Match: Lucy Cadge, Helen Dolding + Hannah Knight
